Who Am I?

I’m a bit of a poser in front of the camera, in case you can’t tell.

Katherine Elizabeth Hatton – Just a young woman who loves a good story. And a cup of tea.

But you can call me Kat. I’m a Calgary-based animator, graphic designer and illustrator with a massive passion for emotional story-telling. I’m all about connecting with my audiences and leaving a strong impact on them. Afterall, art is a conversation and I want to know what makes people think.

Expertise

Adobe Creative Suite

Whether it’s a bit of photo manipulation, digital drawing, or designing business cards, I have plenty of experience with this amazing suite! As an animator, I also have experience with adding in special effects that will really make things POP, and of course making a story-board come to life.

Creative and Academic Writing

University gave me plenty of opportunities to delve into feminism and film, why games should be considered art, and of course the infamous research and analysis of various sociological theories and their uses. If I’m honest though, I’m more of a fiction girl myself (High fantasy anyone?) You need a feel-good story? I can tell you three.

Animation & Film

Animation is my passion! I have experience in computer, traditional and 3D animation. I have also gained an interest in particular effects such as snow or cloud particles. As for film, I have a knack for composition and really enjoy the theory behind what makes a good scene.

Graphic Design & Illustration

Much of my work experience has revolved around graphic design in some way, be it corporate branding or social media. I’ve played around with posters, cards, logos and more. I often explore illustration in my free time which usually comes in the form of commissions or personal projects.

Experiences

Animation & Design Practicum

2019 – 2020

I was given the opportunity to work on multiple projects, including animating for the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival (2019), creating assets for digital summits and conferences, and conceptualizing client’s projects and productions. I was given the chance to work alongside film, editing and audio practicums too! Just ask!

Post-Production Intern

2018

To finish my degree I was given the opportunity to intern at a post-production company where I would research, design and build assets according to client guidelines. I often would storyboard and develop an overall atmosphere and tone for video projects and manage files that met with the company’s guidelines.

Production Manager

2018 – 2019

I was in charge of building and maintaining assets that fit within the company’s brand, as well as adapting to ever changing work environments and deadlines. I often worked with my fellow team members in order to provide the best customer support and service we could offer. Web coding was also a big responsibility of mine too.

Co-Op Web Page Manager

2017

Somewhat of a rarity for my degree, I was hired on as a co-op student for a summer in order to research, design and develop of a proof of concept for the new School of Liberal Education website. This involved a lot of meetings, research into how to accurately communicate with our audiences, wire frames and mock ups, and structuring the website within I.T standards and requirements.

Let’s make something together.
